This was the third of the Spring Treble, it was a lovely warm evening with the sun still shining. Cynthia Lewis and I were allowed to go off earlier with our very own marshal, the watches were set and off we went. We were way in front for the first mile and half, the start is down hill then reality set in as we climbed a very steep hill. The thing with this hill is that you have to do it again, half way down we were greeted by some young cows who thought we were a good game. Our marshall Joyce was not at all happy but I said they will not hurt you and showed Joyce how to handle then. After sorting them out I continued the race .We could not believe how lovely and warm the weather was. Once we survived the uneven part of the woods we came back on the road which was uphill all the way to the finish. Well done Cynthia on your PB.
I managed a pb and I was given a bottle of red for my determination.
Time 1h.16 I think loved it would do it again.
Fordhouses 5k - 25th April
I could not find the words to describe the weather on Friday night at Fordhouses 5k
but once we were there we knew we just had to get on with it doing our best to keep us dry
with several layers of waterproof. Just to get to the start was very waterlogged and I never heard the start so it was a bit of a jump start. There were lots of lovely puddles to run through and once we settled down and soon warmed up the marshalls were very cheerful and there was quite a good atmosphere. There was only 73 entries owing to the weather .It was lovely to see Sam. was glad to get in and change in to dry clothes, while I was getting changed my John picked up my prize for being the oldest runner which was a box of biscuits. Well they are no good to me so when I came back in I took the box of biscuits back and asked to change it for a bottle of wine. John Brown laughed and said "I knew she would not like the biscuits" and we had a great laugh. Janet Pugh ran round with to make sure I would not get into trouble and be ok for Saturday.
times Janet Pugh 39.41. Kathy Ling 39.41
Saturday D Day 70th race 26th April
On Friday night I did not sleep very well owing to my early interview on Radio 5 Live.
Waiting patiently for the phone call 6.50 came and I was still waiting. The lady on the other end was very good and kept checking on me. I found this harder than a 10k race, anyway it seemed to go well. When I arrived at the Town park, I could feel the excitement mounting. Once the run started, with Janet & Cynthia carrying the 70 balloons along with one or two club members it was lovely for everyone to join me in the run. My time was 37.34. After the run I was presented with a picture of me with my 70 races, flowers and a bottle of yummy champagne.
Shobdon 6 - 27th April
The thing you do for a doughnut!
When we arrived at Shobdon the weather was looking pretty rough with dark clouds all around. I tied my trainers extra tight and prepared for the worse, before we could start we had to walk up a very steep hill. I had mutterings from John, I said "You'll be ok, you've got the down hill to go at" - he did not seem too impress with that idea. The race director muttered a few words but all I could hear was that when you reach the bluebell wood you will nearly be home. When you start this race you do a steady climb, I was getting myself into the right gear quite happily plodding along when suddenly there was a downhill with plenty of mud to run though. As I approached mile three I met a marshal who warned me of the very steep gully with loads of mud, it must have been half a mile and seemed to take ages. When I reached the bottom I went straight into very soft mud [thanks to a little beep dog] I picked myself up and off I went on my way. When I reached 3and a half miles there was the toughest hill, it had bends in it, so when you reach a bend there was another and so it went on till we got to mile 4.5. At this point I had to walk a little , once at the top soon got going again, the last mile was through the bluebell wood which was very pretty but the path was very narrow [single track full of mud]. How I managed to stay up I don't know but I kept going to the finish. After I went over the finish line the marshals were calling me to get to the presentation, when I eventually got there I was presented with a plaque because I was the first ever women of 70 to finish the course. It was a nice little plaque and not forgetting a lovely doughnut plus a large packet of crisps and a T Shirt. To me this race was a good challenge but would love to do it again and I know some of our members would too.
