Cannock Chase 10k 10th August

On a damp and wet morning we arrived at the Birches Valley forest centre at Cannock. I picked my number up and watched the race of the dogs and their owners doing the 10k. I loved it as it was brilliant and it was lovely seeing members from our club. 10.30 came and off we went, the first two miles was a shock to my system and of course everybody had gone so usual thing on my own, eventully a man came on his bike. I assumed it was the back up man on his bike - he seem 100% bored with me and he never talked - only to check if I was still alive. Once I got over the shock I settled down to my usual speed and just kept going, I thought I'll show him## I think the worse bit was the extra little hill at mile 5 but then I could hear a lady on the mike and also Sam came to meet me which was great. After the race the man on the bike came up to me, gave me a hug and a kiss and he said he had the greatest respect for me and then he said that he could not do it . Many thanks to all the members who waited for me a big thank you We had a wooden medal which was different although it was a bit of a challenge I would love to do it again. My  time was 1h.37m

Neil Howell 4.5m Friday 15th August

On Friday John and I set off for Montgomery. This race is the last race in the Mid Wales series, it has two very big hills and a very steep finish in the main streets of Montgomery. It started on the Montgomery show ground, I collected my number and met my friend Caroline Orrells who asked me if I would like to go earlier and run with her as it soon gets dark. It was agreed by Paul the organizer so we set the watches and off we went. Caroline said she thinks she knows the way??. Well we ran through places that I could not remember but we kept on going and then we reached the first big hill - huffing and puffing we managed to get up to the top without stopping. I was looking for a big field but Caroline said no we go through the ferns (up to my shoulders) not a clear path at all we then had a fit of the giggles but carried on then we came to a open big field then back on the road and ready for the next big hill. The surface to this was very rough under foot but we keep plodding on then when we reached the top the view was awesome but no time to stare as the leader were coming up. We descended down the long rough path back on to the road then another climb around the castle and a very very steep run down into the main square of Montgomery. John and I stayed in the hotel which was old and funny - everywhere you walked it creaked and we had problems with the lock on the door. After breakfast we set off for Towyn for Race the Train.

Race the T.rain 10k 16th August

 After enjoying a breakfast at the Dragon Hotel Montgomery we made our way to Tywyn. We managed to find a parking space near the buses which take us to the start - I love this race Steve the man on the bike who is back up came over to me, we met again and it's becoming a habit. While waiting for the horn to go off I noticed a young man with a ironing board strapped to his back - puzzling to me? I always find the first bit very hard but once I get to the top and got my breath back I am ok. Making my way down I got into a nice rhythm then its bog time but to my disappointment there was no decent bog - after me strapping my trainers on I was gutted! but enjoyed the stream. When I was at about four miles on top of the hill the train was on its way back with very few passengers and when we came to run through the garden it was a bit sad because I miss Jean and the house was empty. I was at just before 5 miles when Linda came and met me and ran in with me, the last half mile got involved with the little children's race so it was quite difficult to keep running and dodging the children . Loved it and would do it again. My time was1h.47m .
